Xperia Play, Sony Ericsson's PlayStation Smartphone Officially Announced

sony ericsson xperia play frontYesterday evening in Spain, Sony Ericsson officially unveiled their newest Android OS smartphone, the Xperia Play, the world's first PlayStation smartphone.

Hardware-wise, the Xperia Play features a 4-inch capacitive multi-touch FWVGA (480 x 854 pixels) display, a 5.1 megapixel camera with autofocus, flash and image stabiliser, 400 MB of internal memory, 8GB microSD card, 3.5 mm audio jack, aGPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. All this running on a 1GHz Scorpion ARMv7 processor.

On the software side, the Xperia Play will use Google's Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) operating system. The device is the world's first PlayStation Certified smartphone. Sony Ericsson has partnered with important publishers in the gaming industry to provide leading titles available through the Android Marketplace. Some of the franchises coming to Xperia PLAY include: Sims 3, FIFA 10, Guitar Hero, Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell. The company is also partnering up with other publishers to ensure a continues flow of games in the years to come.

The Play will come with a pre-loaded app that will help users to discover and download titles that have been optimised for their device, access recently played games and see information about the games they have downloaded.

Sony Ericsson is getting ready to launch the Xperia Play in March 2011. The price of the device was not disclosed.
