iPhone OS 4.0 Announced: App Folders, Multitasking and More

As expected, Apple has just introduced the 4.0 version of the iPhone OS. There are hundreds of new features packed in this release, so hold on tight, here we go:
App Folders: No more apps scattered around across 6 screens. You now have the ability to sort your apps into folders. You make create a folder by dragging an app on top of another. It also automatically names the folder based on the category that these apps came from.
Multitasking: Most apps won't be actually running in the background, except for certain functions, such as audio or GPS. You can use the fast app switching feature for more productivity. Double-clicking the home button will slide up a frame with all the apps that are currently running. It works just like an alt-tab for Windows.
App Alerts: Apps now have the ability to send out alerts, so if something happens in FaceBook after you closed it to go check your mail, you'll get an alert.
New Mail App: Featuring a unified inbox, fast inbox switching, threaded messages, multiple exchange accounts and the ability to open attachments with apps
iBooks: iPad's book store is coming to the iPhone as well.
Bluetooth Keyboards: Ability to connect a bluetooth keyboard to your iphone.
Game center: This will be Apple's social gaming network and it will work like PSN or Xbox Live. You'll be able to invite friends to games, play with random people via matchmaking, leaderboards and achievements. The service will be available by the end of the year.
Wallpaper: You can have separate images for the wallpaper and the lock screen
Apple will start shipping out the new operating system in June for iPhone and iPod Touch and in Fall for the iPad. A developer preview is available today, so expect most of your apps to be updated in time for launch.
iPhone OS 4.0 will work with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the second and third gen iPod touch. Unfortunately, not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking will only work with iPhone 3GS and the late 2009 iPod Touch.
