sprint 4g wimaxAccording to sources close to Sprint, the carrier is expected to introduce its fourth generation (4G) phone from HTC next week at CTIA, which will be the first phone to support WiMax, Sprint's crazy fast wireless service.

Sprint has already confirmed that they would announce a 4G phone this year, but did not set a specific date and refused to comment on who will be making the phone.

Analysts are saying that the HTC phone, called the Supersonic, will support both Sprint's CDMA network and the higher speed WiMax network, which is theoretically up to 10x faster than 3G networks. Average download speeds on Sprint's 4G network are 3-6 Mbps, while 3G speeds are still stuck at 600 Kbps to 1.4 Mbps.

Verizon has announced plans to roll out LTE service about 30 markets by the end of the year, while AT&T will launch its 4G service in 2011.
