After spending years developing their fourth-generation (4G) network, Sprint is now ready to launch a 4G handset in the first half of 2010.
The new phone will run on Sprint's 4G WiMax network that the carrier has been building with wireless Internet service provider Clearwire Corp and is currently coverign more than 30 million people in 27 markets. By the end of the year, Sprint is expected to also cover Boston, New York, San Francisco and Washington and add another 120 million people to their coverage area.
According to Sprint, 4G technology is up to 10 times faster than 3G, making video streaming, voip calls and other bandwidth-intensive apps work without hiccups.
There's nothing official regarding the handset, but rumors are saying that HTC is already working on a Google Android 4G smartphone.
Verizon is also planning to launch its 4G network, which uses a different technology called LTE, later this year. This will be an interesting year.
