Microsoft this week announced that Windows smartphones featuring the new Windows Mobile 6.5, will begin shipping at retail stores worldwide starting October 6, 2009. The upcoming mobile operating system has a new sleek look and new features that could bring Microsoft closer to its competitors and help them lure in more customers.
One of the new features offered by the OS is a free service called My Phone that lets users back up and sync text messages, contacts, photos and other phone data on the internet, making it easy to restore in case the phone is lost. This feature is similar to Apple's MobileMe service, which costs $99 / year.
AT&T, Sprint and Verizon Wireless are among the US carriers planning to sell Windows Mobile 6.5.
