Nokia to make laptops?

26 Feb 2009 | Netbooks , Nokia | 3 comments

nokia logoSay it ain't so. According to Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, the company's becoming interested in making laptops. Remember what happened to the last cell phone company that tried to make a laptop?

We know the Foleo wasn't exactly a real laptop, but we're guessing that Nokia isn't really trying to get into the "real laptop" market either. It's hard to believe that a newcomer will be capable to survive in a market that is already run by big players such as Dell, HP and especially Apple, so the only solution would be to start making netbooks.

What do you think about this?

Nokia has a history in this area. It was Europe's biggest PC manufacturer (desktops, laptops, servers) before they divested that business about two decades ago. Fujitsu Lifebooks have their origins in that business. See Fujitsu Siemens Computers in Wikipedia.

Oh, still beating up on the Foleo? That's flogging a dead horse.

Back to the subject:
If Nokia wants to give it a whack, I say go for it. Nokia has a good rep for its phones and I'd expect it would produce a good laptop as well. Netbooks seem like a natural and safer course than bumping heads with Dell, etc.

What OS will they have?

Most likely Symbian. They bought them a while ago, right? They aren't in the whole Google Android alliance either.

So I think it's pretty safe to say they'll develop a netbook version of their current OS. That would be so awesome. Nokia already makes really high quality hardware (unlike my old broken Chocolate and several Moto phones).

So yea, go for it!
