iPhone v2.2.1 firmware released, new iPhone in the works?

Apple today released the latest OS X 2.2.1 firmware update for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
As usual, the change log doesn't say much. Beside the general bug fixes, the update includes ... nothing, except improved general stability of Safari, fixed issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll and an issue that caused some Apple Lossless (ALAC) audio files to skip during playback. That's it.
Since we're on the firmware news, looks like Apple did drop us a small hint that a new iPhone was coming.
MacRumors did some digging around and found out that the firmware had a description for an "iPhone 2,1" model. This labeling is being used for both the iPhone and iPod Touch.
The first iPhone was called "iPhone 1,1", while the 3G iPhone was labeled "iPhone 1,2". On the other hand, the second iPod Touch got labeled as "iPod 2,1" because of the addition of a new processor and other external features. This could mean that there's a hardware update coming in the distant future. We'll keep an eye out in June.
