My Top 9 Apple App Store iPhone Apps
14 Jul 2008 | Apple | 7 comments
Since the launch of the App Store on Friday, I had the chance to check out some of the over 500 iPhone and iPod Touch applications posted until now. Most of the are really bad with absolutely no right of being there, but you can find gems as well.
So here's a list of my top 9:
1) Mobile News Network (Free)
Great little app for news on the road. This app is powered by the Associated Press and brings you news from entertainment, sports, election coverage, finance and more.
2) Bomberman Touch ($7.99)
This is basically a remake of the classic Bomberman with a new story. There are no actual buttons to be pushed, except for the 'bomb' one. The movement is really easy and you don't need tactile feedback for this. Just slide your finger in any direction almost anywhere on the screen to make Bomberman move.
3) BattleAtSea ($4.99)
If you're a fan of the classic naval strategy game, then this app is easily worth the money. You can even play a 1-on-1 LAN battle with your friend.
4) Twitterific (Free)
There's not much to say here. If you're addicted to Twitter, you need this app.
5) Remote (Free)
Remote is a free app by Apple that let's you control the music on your computer or Apple TV from your iPhone or iPod Touch. It works with your Wi-Fi network, so you can control your music from anywhere in the house. Other features include the ability to see the artwork on your remote, search through the iTunes library and view playlists.
6) eBay Mobile (Free)
eBay Mobile is a very well designed app that helps you keep tabs on your actions without having to open up Safari each time.
7) My Lists ($1.99)
My Lists is a simple GTD-style app that allows you to track almost anything you can think off like shopping lists, to dos, ideas, etc. Every list can have its own icon and every item can have a note. Interface is clean and it's easy to use.
8) BlackJack 21 ($4.99)
This is one of the better BlackJack apps available on the App Store. It has a lot of options and even Achivements. There are no buttons, so hitting and standing involve finger gestures. Again, if you're a BlackJack fan, this app is easily worth $5.
9) TypePad (Free)
This app is a must-have if you're an on-the-go blogger with an iPhone. You can post photos to your TypePad blog from your iPhone's camera or photo albums. It also has the ability to alert your friends when you post a new entry by automatically updating Twitter.
That's about it. If you have any favorite apps, feel free to post them below.

Having gone through most of the apps myself, I can safely say that I agree with you. Some of the apps have no right of being there, especially the ones that aren't free and suck at the same time. Like Flashlight? Seriously! $0.99 for a white screen?!
By the way, my favorite app so far is OmniFocus. It's a bit pricey at $20, but it's well worth it. I love it!
There's a great review of the Where and AOL Radio apps on Valet magazine.
