Apple today started shipping the new 3G iPhone, announced back in June at the 2008 WWDC in San Francisco together with the 2.0 firmware update, which includes the highly anticipated App Store. Apple already launched the App Store yesterday, allowing users to browse through the over 500 applications and download the ones they wanted.

Features of the 3G iPhone include everything from the previous version plus Assisted-GPS, battery life of 300 hours in standby, up to 10 hours on 2G, 5 hours on 3G and 6 hours on Wi-Fi, 8 or 16 GB of internal memory with no card slot and of course, 3G.

Those of you who currently own an iPhone, the update is free of charge. iPod Touch user will have to pay $10, which will also include the January update for free. You can get it here.

The 3G iPhone is available right now for $199 for the 8GB (black) model and $299 for the 16GB (black and white). Apple is launching the new iPhone in 70 countries this year.

Still can't get the Touch update to work. iTunes is getting hammered.

If anyone is able to get the ipod Touch 2.0 firmware link to work, let us know. I don't know whether's unavailable or just slammed.

I heard Leo Laporte already updated his Touch a couple of minutes after the launch.

How is the iPhone 2.0 update going? Is that also having problems?

by Laughing on Jul 11, 2008

iTunes just went from showing 2.0 available for my Touch but not being able to access it to now saying I'm current at 1.1.4 =)

2.0 knocked me back into deactivated state for my iphone.

so now you can't make calls?

by steve on Jul 11, 2008

tried to update iphone. went into emergency call only mode and i can't get through to the itunes store when the iphone is connected to my desktop. does this just mean that the store is overloaded and once i can get through my phone will finish updating or whatever and will work again?

by Norbert on Jul 11, 2008

Steve, unfortunately, that will probably take all day, as AT&T servers are getting overloaded, just like last year.
