Macworld 2007: Apple Phone confirmed

We couldn't make it to either CES or Macworld, but we're keeping a close eye on both events. This year however, we are more interested in Macworld than anything else. The reason? You guessed it: the Apple Phone. After YEARS of rumors, fake low resolution photos, concept images, concept ads and more, Steve Jobs himself has just confirmed the famous handset. Despite the Cisco announcement from last year, the phone will be called iPhone.

We'll keep you posted as new info gets out. (pictures via MacRumorsLive and Gizmodo)

Official specs:

  • quad-band phone
  • 3.5" touchscreen
  • 2.0 megapixel camera
  • runs on mobile version of OS X (features widgets, Safari browser with tabs and more)
  • 11.6mm thick (thinner than any other smartphone)
  • WiFi and EDGE
  • Bluetooth

The iPhone will launch in June 2007 in the US and 4th quarter of 2007 in Europe. Asia will only get its hands on it in 2008. There will be two models available: 4GB for $499 and 8GB for $599, both with a two year contract.

Updates begin here:

Big surprise here. The Apple phone will be called the iPhone after all. It runs OS X, 3.5" touchscreen display. Apple is guaranteeing that this baby is 5 years ahead of everything else.

It has sensors: ambient light sensor, which helps save power and when you bring it to your ear, the display and sound turn off.

Cingular rumors true. iPhone picked up by Cingular.

Smart! It can tell if it's held in portrait or landscape. Other features include EDGE, Wi-Fi connection, widgets, Google Maps and Safari browser (of course!). The browser features tabs.

8gb $599 with a two year contract? That is a small price to pay for such an extraordinary device. I am from Europe and recently bought a phone, but until this thing will hit my country, my old phone will surly die of old age.
