Apple iPhone announced - Rumors do come true
9 Jan 2007 | Apple , Smartphone | 19 comments
We know our last post was a total mess and we apologize for that. We were caught off guard by Apple with this announcement. While reading the live event, we noticed Steve saying that "we're only talking about the Mac today". It obviously wasn't the case, it never is. About 20 minutes later, he dropped the bomb and made everybody forget about all the brand new CES 2007 announcements. He unveiled the iPhone.
After years of rumors, pictures and conceptual ads, Apple has finally decided to announce one of the most important devices of the year. Don't ask how they managed to get hold of the iPhone name, which was patented by Cisco about 10 years ago. We have no idea. Anyway, let us get to the more important stuff of this smartphone: its features.
Apple has guaranteed that this handset is 5 years ahead of any other mobile phone out there right now. This could be one of the reasons: the iPhone contains 3 built-in sensors. The accelerometer knows when you rotate the phone from portrait to landscape and automatically changes the display. The proximity sensor detects when you take the iPhone to your ear and turns off the display, which helps save power. The ambient light sensor also helps to save power by automatically adjusting the brightness of the display depending on lighting conditions.
At just 11.6mm (0.46") thick, the iPhone is a quad-band phone supporting both GSM and EDGE. It runs on a mobile version of OS X that contains a lot of applications including widgets, Safari with tabbed browsing, rich HTML email, text messaging, Notes and more. It features a large 3.5" multi-touch display, which means that you will only be using your fingers to navigate, no special pen needed. The display also contains a full qwerty keyboard, that makes it really easy to send messages. Other features include a 2.0 megapixel camera, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR.
The Apple iPhone will start shipping in June in the US and in the 4th quarter of 2007 in Europe. Shipping in Asia will start in 2008. The official carrier of the iPhone will be Cingular. Prices depend on which model you purchase: 4GB for $499 or 8GB for $599, both with a two year contract. It still needs to be approved by the FCC before Apple will be allowed to sell it in the US.

pretty
pretty?! this will change the future! nokia and motorola are crying their little eyes out as we speak! they are not the only ones .. imagine the carriers: verizon t-mobile sprint! they are all screwed! Let the war begin!
So its the same price as a ps3, interesting ;)
pretty = f***ing cool
Apple did it again. It took Microsoft decade to improve a real user friendly PDA evolved into hand held PDA phone and still didn't quite succeed to make the device become a real user friendly sleekly gadget. Apple really shock me with those finger tip touching OSX feature and seems make thing so simplified, not even Nokia, Motorola, LG, Samsung, & Sony has such innovation. I am totally stunt by late comer Apple new toy on the block. The question is, will apple able to catch a new wave of market share since it still not exactly in the mkt yet while other makers could still time to rush for similar innovative, copycat, to prevent the threat become real. Especially Microsoft will never sit back and watch it winCE risk facing extinction.
SWEEEEEEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why dont you send it to Canada? Rogers is Canada's cingular ... so y everywhere but here? hummm
Oh, sorry I forgot to mention. Be sure to check out the iPhone clips on Apple's site.

what if it gets rejected by the fcc? that would be fun to watch!
why would you buy A I PHONE FOR $499 OR $599 WHEN YOU CAN BUY A PLAYSTAION 3 YOU CAN JUST GO GET THE NEW EN VE PHONE FROM VERIZON THAT DOES 90% OF THE I PHONE. AND ALSO THE EN VE FROM VERIZON IS A LOT CHEAPER THEY MAY NOT SHOW THIS MSG BRCAUSE THEY NO I AM RIGHT
how can you even compare a PS3 to an iphone? Does the PS3 have the same functionalities as the iphone? or vice versa?
Sickest thing ever. Is this a GSM phone? And I am sure this iphone will be selling online Unlocked so that you can use it with whatever service you want. Cingular is Rogers in Canada, Hopefully I could use this on Rogers in a while.
Sounds like the UI will be revolutionary and all sorts of bells and whistles... just not for the next 6 months. In the interim, I ran across the Alltel CellTop announcement. Check out the YouTube video on http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/celltop/ Appears to be an affordable yet significant upgrade in UI across the phone proce spectrum including inexpensive models. Looks like the 'cell's are analogous with Apple 'widgets' eg one for weather or sports ticker or stocks. Also check out the story http://wpm.articlesspace.com/ArticlesSpace.blog
Could be a great solution for the average Joe (or Josephine)
mother of god!!THIS SHIT ROCKKSS!

Looking for these images, I got your "Hotlinking means bandwith theft" message. Cute, considering these images were jacked from Apple.
Lids, if you want the images, copy them to your server and host them from there. Don't steal other people's bandwidth.
