Sony Ericsson has announced today the P990, which is the first commercially available smartphone to contain Symbian OS version 9.1 and UIQ 3 software platform. Wi-Fi enabled, this UMTS smartphone will allow data communication between devices located in the same coverage area.

Other features of the Sony Ericsson P990 include a 262.000 color (240 x 320 pixel) display, touch screen, QWERTY keyboard, WLAN, Bluetooth, a 2 megapixel camera, video recording, media player, FM radion with RDS, 64 MB of memory and slot for up to 4 GB removable memory.

"The technical prowess of the P990 will be brought to full life by applications from the third party developer community," said Jan Wäreby, executive vice president. "Demand for applications on the P800, P900 and P910 has been very high. Our smartphones have been recognised as the most advanced and useful on the market."

The Sony Ericsson P990 will be available in first quarter of 2006. Price was not disclosed. Images available below:

by J.R. on Oct 10, 2005

yea, sony ericsson really does make the best cameras for their phones. I love them.

by J on Oct 10, 2005

This is a seek out phone bro's

by SkaterJ on Oct 10, 2005

they've got it all wrong with that small screen - p800 & p900 users love their big touch screen and stylus

by J.R. on Oct 10, 2005

indeed, big screen is better. A friend of mine did own a p900, cool, but I rather have a sony ericsson's w800

by Sam on Oct 10, 2005

I call it "the phone that won't make it to America until 2009" ;-)

by CT Kay on Oct 11, 2005

Oh no. The design is all wrong. Why is the screen small? And what were they thinking with the ugly built in pad? What's the use of having flipped keypad to find another keypad inside?? (Virtual keypad anyone?)
I have a P910i, been waiting for a 3G enabled P-series. This one is like the mutant son of P900 and k750. Oh no!!

by Ahmed on Oct 11, 2005

I was hoping for a bigger screen, at least the size of a P800. I am disappointed. I'll probably get the new I-mate

by Siobhan on Oct 11, 2005

Well, I think it's hot. Due out near my birthday -yay-. I'll get it, no doubt. Sounds fun.

by carlos on Oct 11, 2005

Yea, me too. I'm giving up my Nokia for this one, for sure. Sony Ericsson really started to impress me lately. Excellent phones still to come in the future. Way to go !

by Denise Nehme on Oct 11, 2005

i was waiting this kind of smartphone and hope my country will buy same product

by Tim DestroyerofWorlds on Oct 11, 2005

Its a phone guys and gals - you can swap the same inane rubbish on a 50 dollar cheapo.

by Joe Schmoe on Oct 12, 2005

No.... wait....why don't you tell us how you *REALLY* feel about it ?

by Chad on Oct 14, 2005

Where is my big screen seriously......... and for some reason i dont like that menu seriously sony ericsson can do better in the design but keep the support of 4-gig cards and 2 mega pixel camera

by shahid on Nov 8, 2005

what is the price of w900i and p990i oo sony ericsson

by gudu on Nov 8, 2005

can some one tell me the price od sony ericsson w900i and p990i and wanna know .if not sure than can give idea..

by wbiggy on Jan 25, 2006

Well disappointed cause it does not have large built memory like the W900 "470MB", built in keyboard sucks, I mean if it is a touch pad, it should be more than enough, should have had something like 3 megapixels, but ya not that impressive yet, maybe hopping for the P990i, which will be better

by muppets on Jan 27, 2006

There is a lot of lacking info in teh above article. The screen may be physically smaller but the resolution is better so more will actually fit on the screen. the P series from ericsson is know for been teh leader in this market, only surpassed by blackberry. Migrate blackberry with a P series and the P990 is born. Big screen, laptop. What I and teh rest of the untapped market require is a functional phone that doesn;t crash like an MDA or i-mate. Not proprietry, thus symbian. For me the P800 was teh first phone, PDA and gadget that never let me down for its prime function as a phone, and it rocked for all its other features - and the power, it just keeps going, much liek a phone should, unlike many PDA's.
I am amazingly overwelmed that many of teh above comments have been posted, clearly from individuals who have failed to read about the device elsewhere or consider how it fits into the real world and that SE is a commercial business, and for this device have done their homework for attaining the mass market.

by sriram munde on May 20, 2006

i have never seen such a sexy fon ever b4.

by cesar on May 22, 2006

is the best phone i had c b4

by Lawrence Igbodike on Jun 14, 2006

Not bad,but for guys who seek the benefits of PDA/phone its been down graded. P900 was a phone ahead of time so was 910, i had expected alot more with p990 but less in appearance, well cant tell whats in stock yet till i lay my hands on it. But i definately know that certin feature of the p900 series we all were used to 'laegr screen' is lost here so will more other features go with it. I think you should remove the 'P' title for this phone and use any other.
But most of all SonyEricsson is done well.

Sony ericsson designed smart phones with wide range, certaily there is lacking in implementation of p800 p910i, now they implemented the design and introduced in market, certainly P990 is the HANDPHONE OF THE YEAR

there is no edge ,screen is not visible in sunlight.

by bona igbodike on Nov 15, 2007

the feature is very okay but the quality is in doubt.

by jiji_160 on Apr 3, 2008

as skaterJ said... they got it all wrong with that 'small screen' i was thinking of getting one but the 'smaller' screen put me off.. id rather stick to my p910i which has a screen double the size of the p990 one
